Common misconceptions about on-site machining services

https://www.in-situmachiningsolutions.com/contact/There is, unfortunately, a lot of misinformation online about on-site machining services. To ensure you have complete clarity about on-site machining services, we debunk 5 common misconceptions about on-site machining below…

Myth 1. High-quality crankshafts shouldn't need reconditioning

Even high-quality crankshafts that are designed to be incredibly durable require reconditioning periodically. There is no one-size-fits-all answer to how often crankshaft repair and reconditioning should take place, it depends on how frequently it is used, what the crankshaft is being used for and the environmental conditions of where the crankshaft is located.

Myth 2. A crankshaft must be removed before main bearing journal repairs can take place

A team who provides expert portable machining services should be able to repair a main bearing journal and complete a grinding service, without having to move a crankshaft. This ensures you can restore your main bearing journal back to your required specifications without having to disrupt your crankshaft.

Myth 3. On-site machining increases downtime

Regular on-site repairs and maintenance actually decrease downtime, as it eliminates problems and issues before they arise. Should an emergency occur, on-site machining also helps to reduce downtime as the need to transport machinery and equipment to a third-party location for repairs is eliminated.

Myth 4. Metal stitching is unnecessary because cast iron does not weaken over time

Although cast iron does not weaken, it can crack when stressed beyond its limits. For example, if cast iron is exposed to heat for an extended period of time it can crack. For this reason, metal stitching is a necessary and important service that repairs cast iron that has been cracked or fractured.

Myth 5. Thermal spraying is not a suitable option for repairing bearing pockets

For worn or damaged bearing pockets, thermal spraying is an effective repair option. It is essential, however, that the bores are first machined to remove any damage before the thermal spraying takes place. The spray will re-build the removed material and can be re-applied multiple times to allow the material to build up to the necessary specifications.
