Our office was contacted by a major railway repair company with a request to survey a damaged main journal on an English Electric locomotive engine. On our inspection, to the relief of the customer, we informed them that the journal was salvageable at standard size. This meant a significant saving both in terms of downtime and not having to replace the crankshaft, as the repair could be achieved in situ.
